Structure
Film faced plywood is structural plywood coated with a phenolic or melamine resin film on one or both sides.
Surface: Phenolic film (brown/black) or melamine (light).
Core: Multi-layered hardwood veneers with waterproof WBP glue.
Thickness: 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 21mm (common for formwork).
Key Characteristics
High-Pressure Resistance: It's built with a strong, multi-layered core (often using hardwood like Birch, Eucalyptus, or Poplar, or mixed softwood/hardwood) to withstand the immense hydrostatic pressure exerted by wet concrete without excessive deflection or failure.
Smooth, Impermeable Surface: The face in contact with the concrete is coated with a phenolic film (a durable, resin-impregnated paper). This creates:
An ultra-smooth film on the cured concrete (minimizing post-pour sanding/plastering).
A waterproof barrier preventing moisture from the concrete penetrating and damaging the plywood.
Superior Water Resistance: It uses WBP (Weather and Boil Proof) phenolic resin glue throughout its layers. This glue remains stable and strong even when exposed to prolonged moisture and humidity during the curing process, preventing delamination (layers separating) and swelling.
Dimensional Stability: Precision manufacturing ensures consistent thickness and minimal warping, crucial for achieving tight joints between panels and accurate concrete dimensions.
Abrasion & Impact Resistance: The phenolic surface resists scratches, scuffs, and minor impacts during handling, concrete placement, vibration, and stripping (removal after curing).
How it Differs from Standard Plywood
Face: Standard plywood has a decorative or structural wood veneer face. Shuttering plywood has a phenolic film face.
Glue: Standard plywood may use interior (UF) or exterior (MR) glue. Shuttering plywood must use waterproof WBP phenolic glue.
Core & Construction: Shuttering plywood often uses denser, stronger hardwoods or optimized mixed cores specifically for high load-bearing capacity under wet conditions.
