If you are going to use plywood in any form of construction, whether large or small, you need to know the weight. For smaller projects such as coffee tables and bookshelves, knowing the weight may not be necessary. You can test the plywood by yourself and see if it will hold but ensure you check for any damages that may be a sign of weakness.

Weight is a vital factor when using plywood, especially in large-scale constructions. It revolves around factors such as density and the parent wood used to make the plywood sheets. All of these determine the strength and durability of plywood.

Main factors influencing the weight of plywood

  • Type of parent wood that the plywood sheets are gotten from.

Two main types of trees are cut into logs for plywood sheet production: hardwood and softwood trees. Hardwood trees are heavier than softwood trees. For example, plywood made from mahogany or oak is heavier than plywood made from birch. Even when dried and the moisture tubes are empty, the denser wood has more air tubes, increasing weight.

  • The density of the parent wood.

The weight of plywood depends on the density of the parent wood. The weight of the plywood increases with an increase in density. Hardwood trees are denser than softwood trees. But the density also varies between softwood and hardwood trees as not all trees have the same density regardless of them belonging to the same classification of trees.

  • The thickness of the wood sheets.

These sheets are cut from logged trees, and they are cut in different thickness measurements. The thicker the sheets, the more the weight of the sheets, and when they are glued, pressed, and baked together, it results in heavy plywood. Wood sheets are mainly cut in -inch, -inch, -inch, -inch and 1-inch sheets.

However, you might find plywood with thick sheets lighter than plywood with thinner sheets. This is because the type of parent wood and the heavy one with thinner sheets has a higher density than the more lightweight plywood with thicker sheets that has low density.

  • The number of sheets used to make the plywood.

There are no limitations to the number of sheets to be used in the manufacture of plywood. But plywood is only considered plywood if it is made of more than one sheet, so for it to qualify to be plywood, it has to have a minimum of 2 sheets of wood.

2 sheets of wood are light regardless of the type of parent wood and thickness. The weight increases with an increasing number of layers, and if they are thicker and denser, the weight will increase even more. But note that all layers in plywood are uniform but can be from different parent woods. Some manufacturers make heavy-duty plywood that has more than 10 layers of wood sheets.

Some manufacturers give plywood surfaces hardwood sheets then use softwood sheets for the middle layers, enhancing the overall strength and durability of the plywood. Hardwood sheets also have a better look than softwood sheets. Plywood made of mixed wood is slightly heavier than softwood sheets, but it is lighter than plywood made of hardwood sheets only. 

  • Size of plywood

This is just common knowledge that a larger-sized plywood board weighs more than smaller-sized plywood. Plywood is made in different sizes straight from the factory. Most manufacturers have a 4ftx8ft as their largest plywood size. The smallest size you can come across is 2ftx2ft.

  • Amount of adhesive used to manufacture plywood

This is one of the most minor factors that affect the weight of plywood. Still, if the sheets have too much wood fibre, more adhesive will be used to glue the sheets together, unlike sheets with lesser wood fibres. The wood fibres soak up the adhesives quickly, and more will be needed to completely bond the sheets.

  • Plywood treatment

Plywood treatment involved applying preservatives on plywood which will be exposed to elements such as sunshine and insect damage. These preservatives are used on plywood to protect against such elements. They will add some weight to the plywood depending on how much treatment is applied.

  • The grade of plywood

Plywood is manufactured in different grades, commonly known as grades A, B, C and D.

Each of these plywood grades is different, distinguishing manufacturing processes that make some grades better than the other.

Grades C and D are the lowest grades. They tend to be slightly lighter than higher grades such as A and B. these grades are made for different applications. Suppose the application requires strong and durable plywood. In that case, the grade used will be heavier than the grade used in applications that don’t require strong plywood.
