 Plywood Density VS Timber Density

The Density of Plywood is higher than the density of the timber species used to manufacture the veneers . Because there is a compression process in the production of plywood. The pressing machines will compress the veneers under high pressure.

Density of PLYWOOD and Density of Core Veneers

The components of plywood is : face veneer, core veneers and back veneers. The weight  of face/back veneers of plywood practically much less than the weight of core veneers. So the density of plywood is mainly depended on the timer species of the core veneers .

The density of different plywood

Usually 4 kinds of timber species are used to manufacture the cores of plywood ( film faced plywood ) , i.e. birch, hardwood, pine and poplar. The density of different plywood is listed as follows:

PLYWOOD (FILM FACED PLYWOOD) DENSITY (KG/M3 or KG/CBM)

Birch Plywood (Core is birch species)
Birch Film Faced Plywood

ABOUT 680~760

Rubber Plywood (Core is rubber)

ABOUT 700~780

Hardwood Plywood  (Eucalyptus core )
Hardwood film faced plywood

ABOUT 580~660

PINE CORE PLYWOOD
FILM FACED PLYWOOD

ABOUT 570~630

Poplar Plywood
Poplar Film Faced Plywood

ABOUT 530~580

Conifer Plywood

ABOUT 470-520

Sometimes, buyers order combi core plywood , such as combined poplar/hardwood, combined birch/poplar and so on . The density of combi plywood is depended on the components of core . Usually, the density of combi core plywood is about 550~650 KG/CBM .

However,  suppliers usually name the plywood by using name of the species of face/back veneers . For example, Birch plywood can have a poplar core or combi core. In this case, the density of the birch plywood with poplar core will be about 580~620KG/CBM . Only full birch plywood can have a density of ABOUT 680~760 kg/CBM.
