When cutting or sanding plywood, minimizing exposure to formaldehyde (off-gassed from resins) and wood dust (a known carcinogen and respiratory irritant) requires a hierarchical approach to safety. Here are key precautions:

1. Source Control (Most Effective):

Choose Low-Emission Plywood: Opt for plywood certified to CARB Phase 2 Compliant (ULEF or NAF) or EPA TSCA Title VI standards. These have significantly lower formaldehyde emissions. Look for "No Added Formaldehyde" (NAF) or "Ultra-Low Emitting Formaldehyde" (ULEF) labels.

Work Outside When Possible: Perform cutting and sanding outdoors, downwind, to allow natural dilution of dust and vapors.

2. Engineering Controls (Essential):

Dust Collection System: MANDATORY. Use a HEPA-filtered dust extractor/vacuum connected directly to your power tools (saw, sander, router). This captures dust at the source before it becomes airborne. Ensure seals are tight.

Ventilation: If working indoors is unavoidable:

Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV): Use a downdraft table or portable fume extractor with HEPA filtration placed near the work area.

General Ventilation: Combine LEV with strong cross-ventilation (open doors/windows + exhaust fans pulling air out). Position fans to blow dust away from you and towards the exit.

Enclosed Sanders: Use random orbital sanders or belt sanders with integrated dust collection ports connected to a HEPA vacuum.

3. Respiratory Protection (PPE - Critical):

NIOSH-Approved Respirator: DO NOT rely on dust masks.

Minimum: N95 or P95 respirator (filters dust and some oil-based particles). Effective for dust but offers limited protection against formaldehyde gas.

Strongly Recommended: Half-face or full-face elastomeric respirator fitted with combination cartridges rated for both particulates (P100 or N100 filters) AND organic vapors (OV)/formaldehyde (OV/Formaldehyde specific cartridges).

Fit Testing & Seal: Ensure the respirator is properly fitted (fit-tested if possible) and forms a tight seal against your face. Facial hair can break the seal.

Cartridge Replacement: Follow manufacturer guidelines for replacing cartridges/filters (OV cartridges have a limited lifespan even if unused).

4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE - Additional):

Eye Protection: Safety glasses with side shields or goggles to prevent dust and debris from entering eyes. Goggles provide a better seal against fine dust.

Hearing Protection: Earplugs or earmuffs, as power tools generate significant noise.

Skin Protection: Wear long sleeves, pants, and gloves (nitrile or similar) to minimize skin contact with dust/residues. Wash exposed skin promptly after work.

Coveralls/Hat: Consider disposable coveralls and a hat to prevent dust accumulation on clothes and hair, reducing secondary exposure and tracking dust elsewhere.

5. Work Practices:

Minimize Dust Generation:

Use sharp blades and bits (dull tools create more fine dust).

Adjust saws/sanders for optimal dust collection.

Avoid compressed air for cleanup (it aerosolizes fine dust).

Clean Up Immediately & Thoroughly:

Use a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner for all surfaces (workbench, floor, tools, yourself). NEVER sweep or dry-dust.

Wet wipe surfaces after vacuuming if needed. Dispose of rags/cleaning materials properly.

Personal Hygiene:

Wash hands and face thoroughly with soap and water before eating, drinking, or smoking.

Shower and change clothes after extensive work to avoid bringing contaminants home.

Designated Area: Confine cutting/sanding to a specific, well-ventilated area, away from other activities and living spaces.

Avoid Eating/Drinking: Never eat, drink, or smoke in the work area.
